The New Gig
I need to come clean with all of you. Remember when I wrote a few months back that I was looking for a job, but nobody wanted to hire a 60-year-old with Parkinson’s. You know, the double whammy. He’ll retire too soon and will probably file for disability for the Parkinson’s. Both are poor assumptions, but I understand their concerns. The other part of this that I need to confess is that I was looking for a job in which I didn’t have to work with people living with Parkinson’s. At the time I was leading two Support Groups, writing What’s Shaking Man, and was unofficially doing some volunteer consulting on DBS (not as illegal nor intriguing as it sounds). What more do you want from me?! Apparently more…
Since then two support groups have become five, What’s Shaking Man still cracks me up (yes, I write it!) and I started a private practice which only got traction when I advertised I would see people with Parkinson’s or the care partners. Now, I can take a hint if you hit me over the head a few times. So, I found a gig (not as illegal nor intriguing as it sounds). But it is fun, and it is helping people close to my heart - the Parkinson’s community. I will be writing more about my experiences, but for today I offer a podcast introducing me as the new Community Liaison for the Parkinson’s Association of San Diego. It is only 14 minutes long, so you know they had to edit a lot out because I love to talk about myself. And there is an interviewer so he wastes some of the time I could be talking. Here I am talking (some of the time) about my new position (choose “view” after you click the link below):
